Failing or dropping out of school happens more among students in the south of the country

The percentage of students who fail or drop out of study is higher in the south of the country than in the center and north, according to the Education statistics portal.

The Infoescolas Portal has since yesterday new data available, namely regional data that allows you to see on a map of Portugal which areas of the country where students have more academic difficulties.

According to these data, the districts of Viana do Castelo and Braga are two of those that stand out positively in terms of school retention and dropout rates.

In the first cycle, for example, the school retention and dropout rate is 0% in Viana do Castelo. Braga, Aveiro and Coimbra have just 1%, Viseu and Leiria have 2% and then all the other districts have 3%, with the exception of Beja and Portalegre, which stand out negatively, with lead and failure rates of 6% and 4 %, respectively.

In the 2nd cycle, the regions of Viana do Castelo, Bragança and Aveiro stand out positively with just 1% of failures and abandonment, on a map where Lisbon, Portalegre, Setúbal and Beja are once again the regions with the worst average performances ( 5% of failures and abandonment).

Nine out of ten students completed the 3rd cycle within the expected time in 2020/2021, with emphasis again on the north coast with better results and the south with fewer success stories: The rate of failures and dropouts is 7% in Portalegre and in Beja and 6% in Lisbon, Setúbal and Faro.

In secondary school, more than one in ten students in the districts of Lisbon, Beja and Setúbal failed or dropped out of school: 11% of the total, according to data from Infoescolas.

One in ten students in secondary education in the region of Faro (10%) also did not conclude successfully, according to the Infoescolas map, while in Bragança, the retention and dropout rate is 9%.

There is then a lane with a retention and abandonment rate of 7%, which crosses the country from the district of Leiria, passing through Santarém and up to Évora.

Portalegre, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Viseu and Porto appear with rates of 6% and Aveiro, Guarda and Vila Real with 5%. Braga and Viana do Castelo have the highest success rates, with only 4% retention.

Nationally, in secondary education, 77% of students were able to complete the scientific-humanistic course in the 2020/2021 school year without failing and the remaining 23% dropped out of school or failed during the three-year course.

Looking at the evolution over the years, it appears that failure has been decreasing: In 2018/2019, 63% of students managed to finish secondary school in the three years expected, in the following year the rate rose to 70% and, in 2020/2021, it was already 77%.

The improvement trend is also registered among students who opted for professional courses: They were 62% in 2108/2019, they rose to 65% in the following year and to 70% in 2020/2021.

Success rates have also been increasing among younger students: In 2020/2021, 91% of 1st cycle students completed the four years without failing.

The Infoescolas platform has since today new data on more than 1,17 million students enrolled in more than five thousand schools, said the general director of DGEEC, Nuno Neto Rodrigues.

In addition to Infoescolas, the platform also has “Infocursos”, about higher education courses which, according to Nuno Neto Rodrigues, will be updated in the coming weeks.
