Campaign “Zero Tax at the Wheel” starts tomorrow

GNR and PSP campaign aims to raise awareness of the risks of driving under the influence of alcohol

The National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), the GNR and the PSP launch on Tuesday the Road Safety campaign “Zero Tax at the Wheel”, which aims to raise awareness of the risks of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The “Zero Tax at the Wheel” campaign, which runs until next Monday, includes ANSR awareness actions and inspection operations, by the GNR and the PSP, say the authorities, in a joint statement.

The ANSR, the GNR and the PSP point out that one out of every three drivers killed in road accidents has a blood alcohol level equal to or greater than 0,5 g/l and three out of four of these drivers have a rate equal to or greater than 1,2 g/l.

According to those entities, driving under the influence of alcohol causes several disturbances at the cognitive level and information processing, as well as changes in the ability to react to unforeseen events, and motor incoordination.

“Alcohol also decreases the visual field, causing so-called tunnel vision. This loss of abilities, as well as changes in behavior that can lead to states of euphoria and disinhibition, significantly increase the risk of involvement in road accidents.”, Indicate the ANSR, GNR and PSP.

The awareness-raising actions take place in conjunction with the inspection operations scheduled for Largo de Camões, in Faro, on the IC2 in Casal Machado, in Alenquer (Lisbon), on Estrada Nacional 260 at Rotunda da Força Aérea, in Beja, Avenida Bonfim, in Portalegre and Estrada Nacional 4, kilometer 143, in Évora.
