2600 students from Olhão formed a blue ribbon to prevent child abuse

April was Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Around 2600 students from all schools in the municipality of Olhão, dressed in blue, formed, this Friday, April 28th, a giant bow that symbolizes the fight against child abuse.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. To commemorate the date, the Municipality, together with the Commission for the Protection of Children and Young People (CPCJ) of Olhão, held today, at the Municipal Stadium of the city, a Solidarity Blue Ribbon.

One young participant, a student from the Professor Paula Nogueira School Group, referred to this as “an important day that must be remembered to prevent mistreatment of children”. A testimony that demonstrates knowledge and sensitivity to the topic among younger people.

The occasion was attended by councilor Elsa Parreira, responsible for Education, who was accompanied by the rest of the municipal executive. The mayor, who is also a teacher, thanked the “collaboration of all those involved in this awareness-raising action, as we must become aware of mistreatment, and it is not only with young people, but also with older people”.

Sabino Soares, president of the CPCJ, in turn, referred to the “importance of this event for the elucidation for the protection of children”.

This prevention campaign began 34 years ago when a grandmother, to honor her dead grandchildren, both victims of child abuse, put a blue ribbon on the antenna of her car. The color was chosen because it symbolizes the tone of the injuries on the children's bodies, in order to remember the fight and their protection against mistreatment.

This month, all over the world, people come together to create blue human ties with the aim of raising awareness among the youngest, but not only, of childhood abuse.
