The number of people killed on the roads in the first three days of the Easter operation rises to 13

Between Thursday and Saturday, the GNR recorded 668 accidents, which resulted in 13 deaths and 23 serious injuries.

The GNR's Easter 2023 operation registered between Thursday and Saturday a total of 3.650 road infractions, more than half for speeding, and 668 accidents, which resulted in 13 deaths and 23 serious injuries.

According to provisional data relating to the inspection and intensive patrolling of the last three days, from April 06th to 08th, released by the National Republican Guard (GNR), an average of more than four people per day died in road accidents.

On the first day of inspection, the GNR recorded two fatal victims resulting from collisions, a 37-year-old man and a 71-year-old man, respectively in Vila Nova de Gaia and Portel.

On Friday, a screening in Lousada caused three deaths, two men aged 62 and 42 and a woman aged 52.

Saturday was the darkest day of the operation, with a total of eight deaths: two collisions, in Murtosa and Moimenta da Beira, which were fatal for a 55-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man, and four skirmishes, one in Paredes, which killed a 10-year-old child, one in Penafiel, which killed a 53-year-old man, one in Ourém, which caused the death of a 37-year-old man, and one in Trofa which resulted in three fatalities, three men among the 40 and 50 years.

In addition to the accidents, the Territorial Commands and the National Traffic Unit of the GNR inspected 18.584 drivers, of which 237 were driving with excess alcohol and, of these, 135 were arrested for driving with a blood alcohol level equal to or greater than 1,2 g/l.

65 people were also arrested for driving without a driving licence.

Of the 3.650 road traffic offenses recorded, 2.148 were for speeding, 300 for lack of mandatory periodic inspection, 104 for anomalies in lighting and signaling systems, 117 for using a cell phone while driving, 205 for missing or incorrect use of seat belts or retention systems and 112 for lack of mandatory civil liability insurance.

The GNR calls for “attentive, cautious and defensive” driving and warns that it will be especially concerned with risky behavior by drivers, such as dangerous manoeuvres, driving under the influence of alcohol and psychotropic substances, speeding, correct signaling and overtaking, changes of direction and giving way, improper use of the cell phone, as well as not using the seat belt correctly.

GNR's Operation "Easter 2023" will run until April 11.
