A group of teachers is organizing demonstrations at Portuguese airports, on the 22nd of April, to «show tourists that, despite the fact that the country is wonderful, it does not have a valued public school».

The initiative is from the “Missão Escola Pública” movement, the same one that, about a month ago, organized the protest that gathered several hundred teachers next to the 25 de Abril bridge, in Almada.

This time, the stages of the contest will be the various national airports, with greater incidence in the airports Humberto Delgado (Lisbon), Francisco Sá Carneiro (Porto) and Gago Coutinho (Faro).

The “airport robbery”, as they refer, is scheduled for 18:00 on April 22nd, with concentrations planned in the arrivals area of the different airports.

The objective is «to show tourists that, although the country is wonderful and has everything they need, it does not have a valued public school», explained to Lusa Rui Foles, from the "Missão Escola Pública".

Rui Foles also said that although the three main protests were scheduled for Lisbon, Porto and Faro, the movement wants to mobilize teachers for the remaining airports.

Similar to the demonstration on the 25 de Abril bridge, about a month ago, the teachers insist on recovering all the frozen service time (six years, six months and 23 days), the main claim that has marked the successive strikes and protests of teachers since December.

«Do it in phases, by reducing the time required for reform. Find a formula, but give it back in full to all those who worked on it», they say in a statement, criticizing the proposal recently presented by the Ministry of Education to correct asymmetries resulting from the freezing of the teaching career.

«We will not accept the correction of errors with the creation of bigger errors», he underlines.

On the other hand, they also demand the improvement of conditions in schools and working conditions for teachers.
