Professor at UAlg José Moreira elected president of the Higher Education Union

Inauguration is scheduled for Saturday

José Moreira, assistant professor at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Algarve, was elected chairman of the board of the National Higher Education Union for the 2023-2025 biennium on the 8th of March and will take office on Saturday, the 15th of April , at the union's headquarters in Lisbon.

The UAlg professor's priorities are to "fight against job insecurity that affects 43% of teachers and an estimated 75% to 80% of researchers, as well as promoting wage appreciation, whose losses in purchasing power are very close to 30% in the last two decades».

«It is urgent to reverse the chronic underfunding of the sector and in higher education institutions and guarantee decent working conditions for all. At the same time, ensure an equitable, scrutinized and clear mechanism for career progression, in particular access to intermediate and top categories in order to comply with the ratio established in the career statutes, while simultaneously ensuring the renewal of staff through external recruitment», summarizes José Moreira.

José Moreira underlines the importance of the work carried out by the previous management and hopes to resume the negotiation process with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education soon.

«It is urgent to review the statutes of careers and also implement a legal and labor regime for the private and cooperative sector, where atypical forms of hiring proliferate», he concluded.

José Moreira succeeds Mariana Gaio Alves at the head of the union representing higher education teachers and scientific researchers.

The new board of directors of the Sindicato Nacional do Ensino Superior is composed of 25 members and will have Teresa Summavielle, principal investigator at i3S – Institute for Research and Innovation in Health, and Raul Jorge, assistant professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, as vice-president. presidents.

José Moreira, 55 years old, is a professor at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Algarve (UAlg), where he has taught since 1999.

He holds a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Santiago de Compostela (2000). He holds a master's degree in Technological Organic Chemistry from the Faculty of Science and Technology of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (1995) and a degree in Chemistry from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (1991).

He has 20 years of trade union experience. He was active as a union delegate at the University of Algarve and as a member of the outgoing board of the National Higher Education Union.
