“Cachopo Open Days” are back

On the 15th and 16th of April, but also in May and June

The Municipality of Tavira promotes, on the 15th and 16th of April, another initiative within the scope of the program “Os Dias Abertos de Cachopo”, with research and scientific dissemination activities aimed at the general public.

On the 15th, in the village of Cachopo, the tour “Cereal production in Cachopo: biodiversity and milling systems”, by Carlos Faísca (historian), Custódio Campos (miller) and by the Associação Colher para Semear – Rede Portuguesa de Variedades Traditional.

On the 16th, a culinary demonstration and conversation “Agricultural Biodiversity – ancient foods and innovation” will take place in Monte da Feiteira, by Margarida Vargues (Chef), Nuno Palma (local producer) and Associação Colher para Semear – Rede Portuguesa de Variedades Traditional.

The activity will focus on the cereal heritage of Cachopo, on the flavors and knowledge of cereals and seasonal products – how to cook with the family and with children and how these products are prepared in other areas of Mediterranean culture.

The activities are free and will last a maximum of seven hours, with departure from Tavira scheduled for 9:00 am. The actions have a limited number of people and transport is the responsibility of the municipality.

In April, activities mark the National Day of Mills, promoted by the International Society of Molinology. This year the theme of the International Day for Monuments and Sites is “Heritage and Change” and aims to promote the potential of heritage on the path to inclusive, transformative and just climate action.

“Cachopo Open Days”, coordinated by the Municipal Museum of Tavira, aim to protect and safeguard the cultural and natural heritage (one of the goals of the Sustainable Development Goal “Resilient Cities and Communities” of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development). This includes the relationship between intangible heritage and sustainability, centered on the Mediterranean Diet, thus valuing territorial resources and knowledge.

This program is part of the “Mediterranean Diet in Low Density Territories” project, funded by the European Regional Development Fund under the CRESC Algarve 2020 Operational Program. Cachopo Parish Center and the In Loco Association.

In May there are also activities: on the 13th there is a tour “The parish of Santo Estêvão de Cachopo: memory and identity”, by Marco Sousa Santos (art historian) and Albino Martins (deacon), and on the 14th the tour “The paths of the Serra between Montes de Cachopo for the interpretation of architecture and landscape”, by Miguel Reimão Costa (architect).

In June, on the 3rd, there is a tour “Hidden stories in the rocks and landscapes of Cachopo” by Francisco Lopes and Hélder Pereira
(Biology and Geology teachers, specialists in Geological Heritage and Geoconservation), and on the 4th there is a tour “Processes and techniques of traditional, vernacular construction of shale masonry” by Alexandre Miguel Costa (architect).
