North American disappears in the sea after diving on the cliff of Vila do Bispo

Searches resumed this morning after being suspended last night due to poor visibility.

A 27-year-old American who has been missing since the beginning of last night, Friday, after taking a dip from a cliff, between Barranco beach and Ingrina beach, in Vila do Bispo, is be sought after by the authorities.

The first efforts to find the man took place last night, but were suspended in the meantime "due to the lack of visibility conditions on the spot", having been resumed this morning.

Around 20:00 pm yesterday, the District Relief Operations Command (CDOS) of Faro received an alert that a man had fallen overboard, and the Lagos Maritime Police, the Sagres Lifeguard Station and the Vila do Bispo Volunteer Firefighters, as well as an aircraft from the Portuguese Air Force, were sent to the operational location.

«According to what was possible to ascertain, the man was walking, accompanied by a person, next to a cliff between Barranco beach and Ingrina beach, when he allegedly dived into the sea, having ended up disappearing», described the National Maritime Authority.

This morning, the search operations for the 27-year-old man are being coordinated by the Port Captain and Local Commander of the Maritime Police of Lagos and involve elements of the Local Command of the Maritime Police of Lagos, the Lifeguard Station of Sagres, the ship NRP Cassiopeia of the Portuguese Navy and elements of the Volunteer Firefighters of Vila do Bispo and Lagos.

«An aircraft from the Portuguese Air Force is expected to join the search later this morning», according to AMN.

The Maritime Police Psychology Office has been activated and is providing support to the person accompanying the victim.
