Marcelo awaits answers from the Government to doubts about teachers' diplomas

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was received by a group of teachers from various parts of the country

The President of the Republic said today that he is waiting for the Government to respond to "a series of doubts" about the diploma for the teachers' competitions that he submitted to the executive last week.

In Murça, where he is today to inaugurate the Casa Museu Soldado Milhões, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was received by a group of professors from various parts of the country, from Silves to Chaves, who asked the Head of State not to promulgate the government diploma .

The teachers asked Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to make a serious analysis of the diploma because they claim that «it is a poisoned gift for all teachers».

«We need the President to take a clear helping hand», stressed one of the teachers, who spoke with Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, pointing out the recovery of service time, sick leave and the lack of teachers.

In response, the head of state said he had received the diploma from the «Government that covers the matter of tenders and binding, this last Friday and from there, a week ago», he explained, began «counting a period of 40 days that can be extended in accordance with the dialogue maintained with the Government".

«What is a fact is that, since then, I also received, during the Easter week, contributions from teachers, long and detailed, practically from almost all the unions», he referred.

On the basis of this, he added, "the Presidency of the Republic sent a series of doubts to the Government".

«They were sent at the end of last week, I admit that it was until Thursday and now we are waiting for the Government's response on the various issues that arise and we will see later in the face of clarification», he explained.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also said that he has been following this «long process» and underlined that he is waiting for the various responses from the Government, which he will then examine.

With banners that could read “Together, here in Marão we fight for education”, “Respect”, “AE do Cerco do Porto for the valorization of public school” the teachers wanted to show the Head of State that they are not happy with the performance of the Government and the President of the Republic.

The decree-law on the new teacher management and recruitment regime was approved on 17 March by the Council of Ministers and, at a press conference on the new regime, the Minister of Education said that it represents a "structural reform" that will improve working conditions for teachers, also combating precariousness.

The revision of the recruitment regime was under negotiation with the sector's union organizations for more than five months, a process that ended without an agreement.
