Funeral of artist Manuel Baptista takes place on Wednesday

Manuel Baptista, plastic artist born in Faro, died this Saturday, April 8, at the age of 86

The funeral of the Algarve plastic artist Manuel Baptista will take place this Wednesday, April 12, at 15 pm, at the Crematorium of Faro. 

Manuel Baptista's body will be at 18 pm this Tuesday, April 00, at the Basilica da Estrela, in Lisbon.

On Wednesday, the 12th, the coffin will leave, at 8:00 am, from the Basílica da Estrela to the S. Luis Church, in Faro, expected to arrive at 11:00 am, where the wake will take place in the Central Nave of the Church.

At 15:00 pm, the funeral procession will begin towards the Crematorium of Faro.

Manuel Baptista, plastic artist born in Faro, died this Saturday, April 8, at the age of 86.

Manuel Baptista was born in Faro, in 1936. He graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon, where he was a teacher. He was a Gulbenkian scholarship holder in Paris and the Instituto de Alta Cultura in Ravenna. He was one of the artists invited by the Portuguese section of AICA to participate in the renovation of the decoration of the café A Brasileira, in Chiado, Lisbon.

Between 1990 and 2003, he managed the municipal galleries Trem and Arco, in Faro.

He was awarded the 1st Painting Prize/Guerin Plastic Arts Prize (1968), the Soquil Prize (1970), the IV Bienal de Cerveira Painting Prize (1984) and the BANIF Painting Prize (1993).

He has exhibited regularly since 1958. In 2003, Manuel Baptista inaugurated Artadentro in Faro with the Drawing exhibition. Of his most recent exhibitions, highlight is the exhibition Fora de Scale – Drawing and Sculpture 1960-1970, at the Electricity Museum, EDP Foundation, Lisbon — considered by the Portuguese Society of Authors as the best national exhibition of 2011 — and, already in 2019 , Shades and Other Colors, at the Arpad Szenes Foundation – Vieira da Silva, in partnership with the Carmona e Costa Foundation and curated by João Pinharanda, held simultaneously with the show Zonas de Sombra, at Giefarte in Lisbon.
