From Sagres to Fuseta, Algarve marks the International Day of Monuments and Sites

There are activities of various types and for all tastes.

These are some of the activities that will take place in the Algarve, on the occasion of the International Day for Monuments and Sites, which is celebrated on the 18th of May.

This year, the International Day for Monuments and Sites is dedicated to “Heritage and Change“.

«Heritage transforms us and, at the same time, helps us to adapt to a constantly changing world. An example of this are the monuments and historic buildings that are presented as models of good sustainability and innovation practices for the development of new architectural solutions adapted to climate change, or even the use of local resources, thus reducing the carbon footprint with exports. of materials. Among several good examples, it is intended to convey to the public that knowledge and traditional practices, as well as the versatility of cultural heritage, can be part of the solutions to face a changing world. Thus, on the International Day of Monuments and Sites, the objective is to raise public awareness of the diversity, resilience, innovation and contemporaneity of cultural heritage and, at the same time, call for its safeguarding and dissemination», explains the Directorate-General of the Cultural heritage.

The DGPC, as national coordinator of the International Day of Monuments and Sites, made available a platform where information is already available on more than one hundred and a half activities that will take place from north to south of the country and islands in the Museums, Monuments and Palaces of the DGPC , in various spaces of the Portuguese Network of Museums, municipalities, recreational associations, collectivities and other entities.

The activities are mainly concentrated between the 18th and 23rd of April. More information and registration at patrimoniocultural.gov.pt

In the Algarve, the Regional Directorate of Culture also promotes activities in the monuments under its supervision, as you can read here.

Maios Construction Workshop
Municipal Museum of Olhão – Largo da Restauração
Olhão
22-04-2023

Playful ateliers/pedagogical workshops/Workshops

The Municipal Museum of Olhão will carry out, on the 22nd of April, at 15 pm, a May Construction Workshop for Families. The activity stems from the celebrations of the International Day of Monuments and Sites, which this year is dedicated to the theme “Heritage and Change”.

The Maios are life-size dolls that represent people, handcrafted by the people. This is an ancient tradition that may be related to the arrival of spring.

Often, they represent everyday actions and have small sayings written about current affairs. In Olhão, the custom of building and embellishing these dolls remains, which are exhibited on the first day of May, on the EN125, between Marim and Alfandanga.

The Museum thus invites families to make a May and write a quatrain, as tradition dictates.

Interpretive tour with drawing activity in Fuseta
Day: 15-04-2023 Time: 10:30 am

On the 15th of April, Saturday, at 10 am, the Municipal Museum of Olhão will hold an Interpretive Walk with drawing activity in Fuseta in collaboration with the Urban Sketchers Algarve group.

The activity stems from the celebrations of the International Day of Monuments and Sites under the responsibility of the DGPC (General Directorate of Cultural Heritage), which this year is dedicated to the theme: Heritage and Change. The activity is open to everyone.

According to information shared by Urban Sketchers Algarve: “Those who are interested can just follow along or take pictures, but the idea is that they can draw or paint what they are seeing.

To do this, just bring a material to draw/paint that is portable/comfortable. Usually a pad with a base for drawing (for portability) and some material for drawing (pens, pencils, markers, watercolors, etc…). Any method and practice is welcome and we usually see each other's drawings and exchange tips, always in an informal atmosphere of conviviality.”

According to the DGPC, this year's theme: “Heritage and Change” reflects the opportunity to reinforce issues of safeguarding, innovation and commitment to the common heritage that unites us as factors of identity and hope.

In 2022, the Municipality of Lagoa sponsored the work on the roof and facades of the Church of S. Tiago, Estômbar's main church.

During the course of the intervention, under the successive layers of painting and whitewashing, traces of pigments were revealed that covered the architectural and sculptural elements of the main façade and the outer chapel, having chosen to recover the identified color scheme.

This and other aspects of this very important improvement action carried out by the Municipality within the scope of its competences in terms of safeguarding the cultural heritage, will be made known in this public session that will take place in the temple itself and will feature a musical moment enlivened by the Algarve Camerata.

The Algarve Camerata is a professional arch orchestra conceived in 2016 to cement and raise the bar for the performance of classical classical music repertoires in the region.

Premiere of the Documentary «Hole in One. Lagoon Memories. From Prehistoric to Islamic»
Carlos do Carmo Auditorium (Lagoa)
Lagoa
18-04.2023
20h

In early 2022, a project to build a golf course at Quinta dos Poços (Estômbar), at the gates of the village of Ferragudo, led to the discovery of an exceptional ancient human occupation, inserted in a wide diachrony between Ancient Prehistory (Middle Paleolithic) and the Middle Ages (Islamic Period).

The archaeological work carried out revealed a unique coastal habitat with structures and spoils of a housing and sepulchral nature implanted on top of a hill facing south and in the vicinity of a water line.

The data obtained shed new light on the knowledge of the Paleolithic period in the Algarve region and on a numerous set of artifacts dating back to Islam, mostly consisting of ceramics and food (osteological) remains.

The results obtained from the prospecting and excavation carried out and from the further study and chemical analysis of the materials and objects exhumed, were gradually disseminated throughout the year on different digital platforms.

These contents are now compiled in a documentary film that presents the archesite as a whole and explains its importance, both in terms of the space-function relationship, typological classifications of material culture and chronological spectrum, and the integration of information and recovered remains (heritage mobile) in the design of the new tourism-sports development.

Photographic record: Stoneware from Silves, Heritage, Innovation and Sustainability
Silves – Portimao
21-04-2023
18h

The geological constitution of a place determines, in most cases, its constructive processes and marks the image of its architecture.

In the central region of the Algarve – commonly referred to as Algarve Limestone – we can find, in a small strip, the Silves Sandstone which, due to its characteristics, gives this region constructive, architectural and chromatic particularities.

The relevance of this material was identified in the Inquérito à Arquitetura Popular em Portugal, carried out between 1955 and 1960, by the Sindicato dos Arquitetos Portugueses, which describes: «(...)in the region that goes from Silves to the vicinity of São Bartolomeu de Messines, in Triassic lands , appears the “Grés de Silves”, rock formed of quartz granules agglutinated by a ferruginous cement that gives it a dark reddish color; It is a rock that can be worked with relative ease and applied to irregular masonry, fence walls, thresholds, etc».

In Silves, in the construction of the Cathedral and the Castle, this rock was used, strongly marking the image of this city.

This material has stood out, both because it constitutes an important cultural heritage, and because its characteristics allow a reinvention and reintroduction in the construction market, meeting the Sustainable Development Goals, the UN and the challenges of the Circular Economy .

We invite you to collect photographs of examples of the use of stoneware in architecture, on the strip between Silves and São Bartolomeu de Messines, namely: masonry, stonework, whitewashing and pigmented mortars (sliding blocks), for a future thematic exhibition.

The photographs must be sent via email (subject identification: Grés de Silves), to: [email protected], duly identified and accompanied by a Declaration of authorization, sent in a separate document, duly dated and signed, according to the identification document.

Elements that must be included in the DECLARATION:
I, …………………………………………………………………………., bearer of identification document No.………………………… …….(citizenship card / residence permit / passport) I authorize Instituto Superior Manuel Teixeira Gomes – ISMAT, to use the photograph(s) sent by me, for the holding of the Exhibition PHOTOGRAPHIC REGISTRATION: GRÉS DE SILVES – HERITAGE, INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY.

“Cereal production in Cachopo: biodiversity and milling systems”
Cachopo
Tavira
15-04-2023

Guided tours/oriented routes

Tour guided by Associação Colher Para Semear – Portuguese Network of Traditional Varieties, Carlos Faísca (historian) and Custódio Campos (miller) **
At the beginning of the XNUMXth century, with the rediscovery of the fundamentals of genetic transmission (Mendel's Laws), there was an increased effort to obtain agricultural plants with certain characteristics.

Cereals, the basis of human nutrition until very recently, have become more productive, but in many cases, requiring significant investment in various production factors.

In this context, the geography of seed dissemination of improved cereals and/or hybrids was very uneven. There were regions which, due to their economic, social and agrarian structure, continued, until the second half of the XNUMXth century, the use of varieties adapted over millennia by farmers to the local agro-ecological conditions.

Cachopo seems to have been one of those cases, where we will find the living memory of the cultivation of rye and barbelo [wheat], among other cereals.
