Citizens demonstrate their support for the doctor who reported errors at Hospital de Faro

on saturday the 22th

A group of citizens scheduled for Saturday afternoon in the city of Faro, an expression of support for the intern doctor who denounced alleged cases of errors and negligence in the Surgery service of Hospital de Faro.

The demonstration was convened by a movement in support of the doctor Diana Pereira, a group that grew on social networks and which is asking participants to wear a black shirt, carry banners or posters alluding to the theme and, above all, observe silence.

In a publication on the social network Facebook, the organization asks that the demonstration be silent, “as a form of expression of sadness and dismay”, and calls on people to take a photo of someone who has been neglected with a brief testimony or, alternatively, with just the victim's name and a brief caption.

Earlier this month, the doctor reported 11 alleged cases of errors and negligence in the Surgery service at Hospital de Faro, which occurred between January and March, having lodged a complaint with the Judiciary Police against his former training supervisor and the director of the Surgery service at Hospital de Faro.

“Remember that we are going to be next to a hospital, where sick and debilitated people are and it is not our intention to disturb them. […] And don't forget: this is an initiative by citizens for citizens”, reads the same publication in the doctor's support group, which has 800 followers.

According to Diana Pereira, of the 11 cases reported, three of the patients died, two were hospitalized at the time of the complaint in intermediate care and the rest had bodily injury associated with medical error. One of the patients spent a week with compresses on his abdomen, he added.

Meanwhile, the doctor – who was heard on Wednesday at the Hospital de Portimão within the scope of the internal investigation launched by the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve (CHUA) -, asked for the suspension of the medical internship of specific training in General Surgery, a measure that is foreseen in the law, while the processes of investigation of the reported cases are carried out.

The Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) also instituted a process to investigate the complaints made by Diana Pereira and the Order of Doctors announced the creation of a technical-scientific commission of experts, independent doctors, to evaluate the reported cases.

The meeting point for the demonstration is scheduled for 17:00 on Saturday next to the church of São Luís, near the Hospital de Faro.
