Carla Ponte will not be a candidate for the Algarve Tourism Board

According to Carla Ponte, the PS mayors have already decided to "support another name".

Carla Ponte will not be a candidate for the presidency of the Algarve Tourism Board (RTA), she has just announced herself on social media.

In a post published on Facebook, the head of the Tourism, Economic and Cultural Development Division of Albufeira Council explained that she understood that the «imperative» assumptions were not met for proceed with the candidacy.

One of them was the approval of the PS mayors who, according to Carla Ponte, have already decided to «support another name».

André Gomes, current director of the Núcleo de Promotion, Animation and Tourist Information of the RTA and son of Isilda Gomes, mayor of Portimão, was the other name spoken and who has also shown willingness to move forward.

Carla Ponte, who says she respects the «decision taken and assumed», understands that, therefore, «one of the fundamental assumptions for the realization of my candidacy is not fulfilled».

«Under these conditions, if implemented, it would serve to divide the region and create unnecessary noise around the structure, something I do not want to contribute to», he considers.

The possibility of applying for the RTA was «real», according to Carla Ponte, having «an invitation arose from some associations linked to the sector that sounded me out, presented their ideas and made me see that I was a credible solution for the position », he recalls.

The electoral college, which will choose the next president of the RTA, brings together the 16 municipalities in the region, an element of the CCDR of the Algarve, representing the State, 14 business associations and two unions.

Elections are due to take place in June.

«RTA

As I intend to contribute to avoid raising doubts and speculations about this topic, I would like to share with you a few words about my possible candidacy for the Presidency of the Algarve Tourism Board.

As I think you are aware, my name was floated as a possibility to lead the Algarve Tourism Region, something that stems from the electoral process that will take place soon.

This possibility was real, with an invitation from some associations linked to the sector that asked me, presented their ideas and made me see that I was a credible solution for the position.

In view of the arguments and support that were presented to me, at this stage all coming from the private sector, and after careful reflection, I ended up making myself available for this challenge.

However, and because I would not be available to advance at any price, I conditioned an official candidacy to several assumptions that I considered imperative.

From the outset, I let those who invited me know and made public statements that I believe are very clear, that I would only assume a candidacy if my name gathered broad consensus from the private sector, as I believe they are a fundamental anchor in this whole process. I felt that this support was a reality and that my name was gaining consensus.

I also made it a condition that my name be presented and approved by the mayors of the Socialist Party. It is known, the scenario of the distribution of votes for this election and the influence of the mayors elected by the Socialist Party in the final result.

Since my name was already in the public square, I understood it to be my obligation to convey to the Socialist Party, through its regional leaders, the invitation that was extended to me, my availability, the arguments that were presented to me, the support that was guaranteed to me. and my conditions to move forward.

It is already known that the mayors of the Socialist Party legitimately assumed the decision to support a name other than mine.

Therefore, and respecting the decision taken and assumed, I understand that one of the fundamental assumptions for the realization of my candidacy has not been fulfilled. Under these conditions, if implemented, it would serve to divide the region and create unnecessary noise around the structure, something I do not want to contribute to.

For my part, I am grateful for the support of all those who suggested my name as a solution to lead an entity with so much history and importance for the Algarve. I feel very honored by this invitation and by the recognition of my work of more than 25 years dedicated to the sector.

To everyone who contacted me over these weeks, I apologize for any lack of response on my part, as I received many calls and contacts. But I leave you, above all, a huge thank you for the love and support you have given me.

It's great to know that I have you by my side.

Anyone who knows me knows that I really like what I do, I really like the people who work with me and, although there are less good days, I always give the best of myself, because I don't know how to be any other way in life. That's what I will continue to do.

Well done!
