Algarve bets on creative, cultural and gastronomic tourism to attract Spanish tourists

Turismo do Algarve will promote actions in Spain over three months

Turismo do Algarve will show its knowledge and traditional flavors, «from handicrafts to gastronomy and its local agro-food products», in promotional actions that will be carried out with the communities of Madrid, Catalonia and the Basque Country, in Spain, in the months of April , May and June.

The first of these actions, which will cover «Cultural Tourism, Creative Tourism and the Mediterranean Diet», will take place tomorrow, the 18th, in Madrid, where the Algarve tourist offer will be presented «to a group of travel agents from Ávoris group, owner of the brands Btravel, Halcon Viajes, RAAC Travel and Viajes Ecuador, among others, followed by a networking cocktail».

The action in the Spanish capital will be attended by João Fernandes, president of Turismo do Algarve.

The model of promotional action and networking will be replicated in Barcelona, on the 27th of April, «where a second group of travel agents from the Ávoris group will deepen knowledge about the tourist and cultural offer of the Algarve».

Between the 5th and 7th of May, the Algarve delegation will be at the «Expovacaciones» tourism fair, in Bilbao, «where the region will have its own space with 10 information desks and tourism promotion among professionals in the sector and the general public. ».

In addition to the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA), the municipalities of Albufeira, Aljezur, Lagoa, Lagos, Loulé, Olhão, Portimão, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António will be represented.

The Algarve stand at «Expovacaciones» will be animated with the dissemination of the Algarve's cultural offer and with gastronomic demonstrations «to promote the Mediterranean Diet among the Basques, who this summer gain a direct flight from Bilbao to Faro».

«The new air route will be operated by Volotea and will have two weekly flights, providing more than 12 thousand seats during the operation, which runs from the end of May to the beginning of October», recalls Turismo do Algarve.

From the 25th to the 28th of May there will be a familiarization visit with the destination for Spanish travel agents.

«Fam Trip Algarve will publicize the offer of cultural and creative experiences based on handicrafts and local agro-food products that exist in the region, as well as the offer of artistic and cultural events in the destination, passing on the image of the Algarve as a unique region, with wide range of experiences and entertainment events offered throughout the year», he reveals.

In May and June there will also be two multimedia communication campaigns, which will, "through social networks, websites, blogs, press, hobbies, photography and video, impact residents of the Spanish communities of Andalusia, Madrid, Estremadura and Galicia, with the aim of motivating tourists to enjoy the offer of creative tourism experiences and artistic and cultural events existing in the region, promoting greater involvement and proximity to the destination, thus reinforcing the reputation of the Algarve brand».

«The Spanish market represented, in the pre-pandemic period, more than 400 thousand guests and more than 1,1 million annual overnight stays in tourist accommodation in the Algarve, mostly concentrated in the Easter period and in the summer months. With this set of initiatives, it is also intended to reinforce the fight against the seasonality of tourist demand in the region that originates in this important proximity market», points out Turismo do Algarve.

These actions to promote the Algarve in Spain are part of the Algarve Premium project (aiming to promote the internationalization of excellent products from the Algarve region, and the activities of the RTA in this project focus on Cultural and Creative Tourism, in particular the promotion of a annual calendar of cultural events) and the Algarve Craft & Food project (aiming to promote sustainable tourist experiences, especially in rural areas and inland Algarve, while simultaneously supporting and revitalizing traditional practices that help to increase the income of artisans and local food producers), both projects co-financed by CRESC Algarve 2020 – Algarve Regional Operational Program
