“Albufeira with Heart” improves the lives of cardiovascular patients

In Portugal, around 35 people die annually from cardiovascular diseases, which continue to be the leading cause of death.

A space that acts both in rehabilitation and in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. “Albufeira with Heart”, inaugurated this Tuesday, April 5, was born to help improve the lives of patients, in a partnership between the City Council and the Algarve Biomedical Center (ABC).

This new space, which has several physical exercise machines, such as treadmills, will have a capacity for eight users and was even up and running even before the official inauguration.

There, the “A3_COR – Algarve Active Aging Cardiac and Osteoarthritis Rehabilitation” program is followed, promoted by the ABC, which implements an exercise protocol aimed at patients suffering from post-infarction, hypertension and knee osteoarthritis.

One of the peculiarities, explained by the researchers Maria Pinto and Tatiana Neto, is that prevention is also carried out, precisely in people who only have risk factors such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Before starting the process, which lasts 12 weeks and is customized by sports coaches and physiotherapists, all patients are seen at the Laboratory of Health, Aging and Kinetics at the University of Algarve, in Gambelas (Faro).

After this evaluation, people are part of the program that is already working in Loulé and Quarteira, as well as Albufeira.

Currently, 144 people are participating in this initiative: 68 in post-infarction intervention and 75 in control.

This new space “Albufeira com Coração” also follows on from other initiatives that the Albufeira Council has implemented, such as the “Automatic External Defibrillation Programme”.

In statements to the Sul Informação, José Carlos Rolo, mayor of Albufeira, spoke of the relevance of this new feature in the municipality.

“It is important that people come here. Today is not the most important day, but the ones to come when citizens and tourists are here being accompanied », he said.

The mayor also referred to the fact that the space, which belongs to Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Albufeira, had been «very well used».

Inês Araújo, vice-president of the Algarve Biomedical Center, said that this space «is a good example of the partnership» between the ABC and the Albufeira Council.

“Albufeira com Coração” was financed by “CRESC Algarve2020” and will be extended to a second location, in the Sports Pavilion in Olhos de Água.
