The municipality of Vila Real de Santo António will host the «Peace Run», this Friday, March 17, starting at 9 am, the biggest relay race in the world with the Torch of Peace, which will pass through three teaching at the D. José I School Grouping: EB de Monte Gordo, EB1/JI Caldeira Alexandre and EB1/JI António Aleixo.
According to the Municipality, this global humanitarian event aims to «promote international friendship and understanding, having already passed through 155 countries and counted with more than 635 thousand kilometers covered».
Since 1987, when it was founded, more than 7 million people have participated in the Peace Run.
An international group of volunteers, in a relay race, carries the Torch of Peace and visits schools, associations and sports groups in several countries, taking it to all local communities.
To the children they transmit the message of Sri Chinmoy, visionary of peace and creator of this initiative: «peace begins within each one of us. The first step is yours!”.
Several personalities have already participated in the event, sharing their hopes for a more harmonious world. These are the cases of Pope Francis, Pope John Paul II, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Mikhail Gorbachev, Nelson Mandela, Carl Lewis, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Catarina Furtado, Dulce Félix, Rui Costa, Sérgio Conceição, Nuno Delgado, among many others. others.
