“Sophia Student”: University of Algarve wins Best Animated Short Film

The University of Algarve was the winner of the "Sophia Student" in the category of Best Animated Short Film with “A Semente que Palpita”, by Marta Ribeiro, Alice Afonso, Tiago Pimenta and Laura Pires. 

The winners of the 9th edition of these awards – in the categories of Animation, Documentary, Fiction, Experimental, Poster and Masters/PhD – were announced this Sunday, March 5th, in Albufeira, by the Portuguese Film Academy, and of the 39 short films 15 were distinguished in the contest and two received honorable mentions.

Still in the category of Best Animated Short Film, which the University of Algarve won, second place went to “TUNDRA”, by Daniel Monteiro from Escola Superior de Media Artes e Design, and “Juni e Evy”, by Matilde Senos, University for the Creative Arts.

“While there are sheep”, by João Mendes Pinto from the Catholic University of Portugal – School of Arts, was the winner in the category of Best Documentary Short Film.

“Panem Aurorae”, by Inês Catita, Catholic University of Portugal – School of Arts, and “Natan”, by Cátia Alpedrinha and Catarina Eduardo, from ETIC – School of Technologies, Innovation and Creation, occupy second and third place, respectively. In this category, an honorable mention was also given to “Um Dia Um Rio”, by Diana Caneira, from Escola Superior de Arte Design das Caldas da Rainha of the Polytechnic of Leiria.

The prize for Best Experimental Short Film was given to Diogo Bento from Universidade Lusófona for directing “I forgot to fear”. “City Life”, by Afonso Carreira and Raul Reis, from ETIC, and “O Tempo Writes in Red” by Patrícia Fernandes, from the University of Beira Interior, occupy the second and third places, respectively.

“Encoberto”, by Rodrigo Rebello de Andrade, from Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema, was the winner in the Best Fiction Short Film category. The second place was occupied by “O Tempo e a Vontade de Ficar”, by Henrique Linhales Rangel, from the University of Beira Interior, and “Vanette” by Maria Beatriz Castelo, from the Lusófona University, came in third.

The award for Best Master's and Doctoral Short Film went to “Body and Landscape”, by Raquel Medeiros, from Escola Superior Artística do Porto (ESAP). In second place was “O Abafador”, by Silvana Torricella from the Escola Superior de Media Artes e Design, while “Midnight Glow”, by Pedro Hasrouny, from Universidade Lusófona, received the third place prize.

The Portuguese Film Academy also awarded an honorable mention to the short film “O Que Não Tem Nome”, by Cybelle Mendes, from the University of Beira Interior.

In the category of Best Poster, the winner was “Tundra”, by Daniel Monteiro from Escola Superior de Media, Artes e Design. “Faísca”, by Laura Equi, from the Higher School of Education and Communication of the University of Algarve, was in second place, while “The Space in Between” by Joana Dantas, from the University of Minho, and “Utopia”, by Beatriz Carmo and Carlos Brás, from ETIC – School of Technologies, Innovation and Creation, were in third place.

The first classified in the Animation, Documentary, Fiction and Experimental categories are therefore among the candidates for nominations for the Sophia Student Prize, which will be awarded at the Sophia Awards ceremony to be held on the 21st of May at Casino do Estoril.

This was the second consecutive year that the Sophia Student Awards took place in Albufeira.

During the weekend, 200 young participants were able to attend a masterclass by João Nunes, “Work in Progress: Audiovisual writing in the XNUMXst Century”, in a debate on the importance of writing for moving images with the collaboration of the Portuguese Association of Screenwriters and Dramaturgs, entitled “No Principle era o Verbo” and also in the conversation “Mitos and Legends”, with Frederico Serra and Nuno Soler, where the adaptation of the world for cinema and television was discussed.

The Sophia Student Awards are an initiative carried out in collaboration with the Academia Portuguesa de Cinema – Associação Portuguesa de Artes e Ciências Cinematográficas, which «aims to encourage and motivate young future filmmakers, to stimulate teaching institutes and their teaching staff and to favor the debate and sharing of experiences, through the presence of several national and international specialists, holding workshops and workshops, masterclasses, viewing nominated films and awarding prizes to the best films in competition».
