SEF inspects warehouses converted into housing for immigrants in Faro

This operation came about "after an abnormal registration of people with the same address was detected"

The Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) inspected this Thursday, March 2, six warehouses, transformed into housing for 132 immigrants, in Monte Sabino, in the parish of Conceição, municipality of Faro. Men, installed in bunk beds, pay 100 euros per mattress.

This operation came about "after an abnormal registration of people with the same address was detected", says the SEF, in a statement.

According to the Foreigners and Borders Service, “the owners rented each warehouse for 700 euros/month to the tenants, who put bunk beds there, then subletting each mattress for 100 euros/month to the workers”.

In the operation, 132 foreign citizens were identified, all men, four of whom were notified for abandoning national territory.

The vast majority are in a situation of regularization through the mechanism provided for in paragraph 2 of article 88 of the Foreigners' Law.

On the spot, the SEF found that these men «are dependent on fellow countrymen, managing partners of companies providing services for the transfer of labor to agricultural holdings, where the professional exercise is not carried out continuously».

The SEF «will now communicate this situation to the competent authorities to verify the conditions of habitability in which citizens find themselves».
