Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Quarteira is born to create new social responses

Since 1986, no Santa Casa da Misericórdia has been created in the Algarve

The Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Quarteira was born. The new institution, whose foundation took place on February 28, in the Municipality Centre, has the clear objective of «helping to combat the problems» of a parish that «has grown a lot», but in which there is a lack of social responses.

The founding act of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Quarteira was accompanied by the Sul Informação and the Installing Commission, led by Telmo Pinto, took office.

Speaking to journalists, the president of the Parish Council of Quarteira explained that Misericórdia was born because “social needs are enormous”.

«The growth of our parish has created new difficulties that will only increase. We know that there are institutions that work well, but we feel that more is needed », he considered.

Although the first projects of this Mercy are not yet known, the president of the Installing Commission already has his priorities well defined.

One of them is the «homeless» for whom, he defended, it is «urgent to create overnight areas». To this are added the answers for the elderly.

«Having 37 beds in a parish like Quarteira is not acceptable. Home support is also scarce and we want to make up for that», guaranteed Telmo Pinto.

The Installing Commission will function for a maximum of one year.

After that deadline, the first governing bodies must be elected, but the perspective of Armindo Vicente, president of the Regional Secretariat, is that the election takes place much earlier.

«I would say that, in three/four months, we will have the first governing bodies», he told journalists.

According to this official, the creation of this Santa Casa da Misericórdia is «a reinforcement of our movement, in a place that is growing a lot and has many problems».

And what will be the initial objectives?

«Our idea is to look at the local diagnosis, check with the entities that work in social action and see what are the most urgent and emerging responses, whether in terms of aging or the creation of crèches», said Armindo Vicente.

The official also underlined the fact that, since 1986, no Mercy had been created in the region.

«It's been 37 years since the Algarve had the foundation of a Santa Casa. At the time, curiously, it was in Boliqueime, also in the municipality of Loulé», he stressed.

The creation of the Misericórdia de Quarteira was “sponsored” by Manuel de Lemos, president of the União das Misericórdias Portuguesas, on a visit to the Algarve.

The official assured that “there will be no lack of support” for this new Mercy.

Vítor Aleixo, mayor of Loulé, also participated in the founding act of this Santa Casa.

The mayor considered that the creation of this new identity shows the «vitality» of Quarteira.

“It is a moment of joy and an important moment for the city. His Catholic community got organized and founded a new organization. It is a sign that Quarteira continues to grow, to equip itself to solve its problems", he concluded.
