Monte Gordo receives first edition of the Sand Motorcycle World Cup

Monte Gordo stage of the first edition of the Sand Racing World Cup (FIM Sand Races World Cup), a new competition of the Fédération Internationale de Motorcycling (FIM) aimed at motorcycles and quads, whose winner will be known between the 17th and 19th of November. 

The municipality of Vila Real de Santo António thus makes its debut in the organization of one of the biggest events in the world in the category, in the middle of the low season, with thousands of visitors expected at Praia de Monte Gordo, between participants, organizers and lovers of the sport.

Álvaro Leal, councilor of the Municipality of VRSA responsible for Sports and Youth, revealed, at the Lisbon Tourism Exchange (BTL), that «Monte Gordo Sand Experience» will run like the «Enduropale du Touquet», in northern France, and the «Enduro del Verano», in Argentina, the first two races of the competition, which took place last February.

«The event is expected to have a very positive impact on the local economy, from commerce to the hotel and restaurant sectors, and reinforce the idea that Vila Real de Santo António and the Algarve region have the potential to be visited throughout the year. year. We estimate that hotels in the municipality and neighboring areas will register maximum occupancy levels during the race», says Álvaro Leal.

The Sand Racing World Cup comprises a total of three stages and Monte Gordo will be part of the international sports calendar, receiving the best riders in the world to compete in the last race of the competition.

The first day, 17 November, will be dedicated to administrative and technical checks at the Vila Real de Santo António Sports Complex. The 18th and 19th are reserved for the competitions, on a circuit of around 5 kilometers that will be built on the beach, taking advantage of the low tide to hold the races.

Organized by the Automóvel Club de Portugal (ACP), together with the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António, and under the aegis of the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) and the Motorcycling Federation of Portugal (FMP).

To avoid any environmental impact, there will be a technical team responsible for drawing up, implementing and monitoring the Environmental Enhancement Plan.

A work and supply park will also be created and, during vehicle maintenance or inspection operations, it is mandatory to use an absorbent mat under them, in order to avoid any type of spillage.

All waste produced will be correctly packaged and sent to the appropriate final destination.

Actions such as the planting of pine trees, the distribution of information on good practices and the reinforcement of equipment for the collection of undifferentiated and recyclable waste are also planned.
