Loulé will have Municipal Police

Until the 15th of April, interested parties can send their suggestions to the Municipality of Loulé

Approval was in 2001, but it never got off the ground. Now, 22 years later, Loulé will have a Municipal Police: the draft regulation for the organization and functioning of this service is in public consultation until 15 April.

According to municipal officials, the «creation of the Municipal Police in Loulé will consist of a proximity service par excellence, aimed at complying with rules and regulations, in a permanent pedagogical perspective and a sense of security».

The Municipal Police of Loulé was approved in 2001, however it was never implemented in practice. In view of the numerous legislative changes with regard to the competences and organization of the Municipal Police, there was a need to draw up a new regulation, updated to the new requirements, both at the legislative level and in terms of the specificity of the Municipality of Loulé.

The Municipal Police is characterized by being an administrative police service, assuming a relevant role in the municipality, namely in carrying out actions to monitor compliance with laws and regulations on matters relating to the attributions of municipalities and the competence of their bodies, namely in matters related to urban planning, construction, protection of the environment and game resources, commercial establishments, occupation of public space, publicity, monitoring of sporting and cultural events, defense of cultural heritage, among others.

It also has a pedagogical component and proximity to citizens, in close collaboration with other entities, through awareness-raising actions and dissemination of matters of relevant social interest in the Municipality, namely in the areas of environmental protection, use of public spaces, road safety , between others.

It also cooperates with the security forces in maintaining public peace and protecting local communities.

The Municipal Police of Loulé will exercise its powers in the area of the Municipality, made up of nine parishes, with an extension of 764,39km2 and a population of 72.373 inhabitants.

The proposed regulation is available here

Until the 15th of April, interested parties can send their suggestions to the Municipality of Loulé, at Praça da República, 8104 -001 Loulé, or by email to [email protected].
