José Apolinário demands that the recipe for the Fortress of Sagres stay “at home”

President of CCDR Algarve criticizes the Government's alleged intention to centralize revenue from monuments and museums that are managed by the Regional Directorates of Culture

Ticket revenue from the Fortress of Sagres must "be allocated to the running costs of this national monument" and finance "a technical and human resources body suited to the public service mission" it provides, defended José Apolinário, president of the Coordination and Regional Development, this Monday.

In a statement "in defense of the enhancement of the cultural heritage and the Fortress of Sagres" sent to the newsrooms, the president of CCDR leaves strong criticisms of the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage (DGPC), which he accuses not only of doing nothing to enhance this monument, but also preparing to collect revenue from the ticket office in Sagres «to finance services in Lisbon, in a line of centralizing revenue collection».

This position was taken following a report in the newspaper Público, which reported on the Government's intention to transfer responsibility for museums and monuments managed by the Regional Directorates of Culture to the DGPC, within the scope of the process of decentralization of competences, that will extinguish these last entities, to integrate them in the CCDR.

This intention, says the Público newspaper, has not yet been officially confirmed or denied, not least because the new DGPC model is still being designed.

José Apolinário defends, in his statement, that the contribution of this entity to «the valorization of Sagres as cultural heritage has been very close to zero. The commitment of the DGPC to the choice and continuity of Sagres as a European Heritage Mark or to the investment of more than three million euros in the recent Multimedia Interpretive Center alluding to the Discoveries is null and void».

«By the way, if there were any doubts about the reading of the DGPC of cultural heritage in the territory, it would be enough to analyze the choices of the measure of the PRR - Recovery and Resilience Plan for the requalification and conservation of museums, monuments and public palaces: with a budget of 150 million euros, 60 million allocated to museums and monuments in the city of Lisbon and only 621 thousand euros of investment in Sagres», emphasizes the president of CCDR do Algarve.

As for the alleged «line of centralization of revenue collection», this violates the «relative to the protection and enhancement of cultural heritage».

«Sagres Fortress ticket revenue must, therefore, be allocated to the running costs of this national monument, with a technical and human resources body adequate to the mission of public service of access to culture and heritage, endowing this unique monument with an educational service (non-existent at the moment), with a cultural program that values Sagres as a European Heritage Brand, whenever possible with the dynamization and promotion of other national monuments in the region», concluded José Apolinário.
