Housing: Automatic income support covers 150 contracts

Approved today by the Council of Ministers

Automatic income support, approved today by the Council of Ministers, currently covers 150 contracts, said the prime minister, appealing to tenants to confirm whether landlords have declared what they owed to the tax authority.

Speaking to journalists, at the end of the Council of Ministers in which part of the measures of the More Housing Program were approved, António Costa explained again that the new extraordinary rent support, with a maximum value of 200 euros per month, is intended for tenants with effort (monthly income related to the payment of rent) above 35% and income up to the 6th IRS scale (inclusive), will be paid automatically.

Income support – he stressed – is “a temporary measure”, which will be in force for the next five years, with the Government committing to “work so that the public housing offer will allow the rental market to normalize” during this period.

The support – which applies to contracts concluded until December 31, 2022 – is monthly, non-refundable and corresponds to a percentage of the monthly rent value up to a limit of 60 months, which will correspond to 35% of the effort rate in the first 12 months, decreasing to 40% between 13 months and 36 months and to 45% between 37 months and 60 months.

The Government understood that “there were no reasons to postpone the measures of an extraordinary nature and temporary duration”, namely the extraordinary rent support and the subsidized interest for housing loans, which were approved today by the Council of Ministers.

On the remaining legislation of the Mais Habitação Programme, whose approval was postponed to the 30th, the Prime Minister justified that this was due to the “request made by various entities”, namely by the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities, “in the sense of extending the period of public discussion", which "is being "participated and rich".

António Costa also said that “fortunately” the opposition parties also contributed with proposals for a “fundamental debate in the Assembly of the Republic”, on a “relevant topic” for Portuguese society.
