Strike in the civil service starts today to have an impact on hospitals and garbage collection

Strike starts at 00:00 on Friday

The national strike by civil servants, which starts at 00:00 on Friday, will have its first impacts later today, especially in hospitals and garbage collection services, according to the Common Front.

«The strike begins at the beginning of today's night shift, with workers in the health and waste collection areas being the first to go on strike and what is expected is a mass adherence, both tonight and during the day tomorrow», said the coordinator of the Common Front of Public Administration Unions, Sebastião Santana, to Lusa.

The CGTP's union structure expects a "mass adhesion" to the public administration workers' strike, which "during tomorrow [Friday] will have greater visibility", he added.

«We are anticipating that many Social Security services, citizen shops, conservatories, finances will be closed, we are expecting a great impact on these services, also in the health area, with many external consultations closed, and also in schools», he said. Sebastian Santana.

Among the reasons for the strike called by the Common Front are the demand for immediate salary increases, the setting of maximum limits for the prices of goods and services, the valuation of careers and the reinforcement of public services.

The first assessment of the strike should be made this evening by the Common Front, with declarations by unionists who will be at the municipal shipyard in Amadora and, closer to midnight, at the entrance to Hospital de São José, in Lisbon.

In the education sector, the National Federation of Teachers (Fenprof) announced this week that teachers and educators will participate in the Public Administration strike and non-teaching workers are covered by the prior notice of the Common Front.

For the day after the strike, on Saturday, a national demonstration is scheduled in Lisbon, promoted by the CGTP, for the general increase in wages and pensions in view of the rise in the cost of living.
