Fortress of Sagres received 437 thousand visitors in 2022

The registration of entries to the Fortress of Sagres is only surpassed, in terms of monuments under the supervision of the DGPC or the DRCN, by the Jerónimos Monastery (870.321 visitors), classified as a World Heritage Site, and by the Porto Cathedral (509.702)

The Fortress of Sagres received, last year, around 437 thousand visitors, a number only surpassed, at national level, by the Jerónimos Monastery and the Porto Cathedral. 

The Fortress of Sagres is the most visited monument in the region and the third with the highest number of entries when compared to the monuments assigned to the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage (DGPC) and Regional Directorate of Culture of the North (DRCN).

«The numbers show an exponential increase in visitors to the monuments under the tutelage of DRCAlg, in relation to the years 2020 and 2021, already with a record of entries very close to 2019, the best tourist year in these places», says the Regional Directorate of Culture from the Algarve.

The Fortress of Sagres received 437.035 visitors, 204.197 more than in the same period of 2021. In percentage terms, a growth of 87,69% was recorded, approaching the number of visitors in 2019. The difference between the number of visitors in 2019 and 2022, it is minus 3,78%.

«The new Exhibition Center of the Fortress of Sagres, which includes a contemporary art gallery, now provides visitors to the monument with a more complete, more interactive and dynamic experience, reinforcing the reasons for new visits and anticipating good prospects for 2023», anticipates the Regional Directorate of Culture.

In 2022, the Roman Ruins of Milreu received 19.693 visitors, a figure that almost doubles the number of visitors in 2021 (10.914), and surpasses the number registered in 2019 (19.414). Compared to 2019, the ruins recorded 259 more entries, which corresponds to an increase of 1,33%.

The Hermitage of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe is the monument whose recovery is being slower. However, in 2022, it had an increase of 81,91%, compared to the previous year, which meant 1.702 more visitors. Despite not yet reaching the values ​​of 2019, the numbers show good indicators.

In total, the Fortress of Sagres, the Hermitage of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe and the Roman Ruins of Milreu received 460.48 visitors, an increase of 87,31% compared to 2021, which translated into an increase of 214.648 visitors. The results obtained are already very close to those achieved in the pre-pandemic period (in 2019, a record 480.948 entries were recorded).
