Banco Alimentar do Algarve turns 16 and raises awareness of “less waste”

With an activity through the streets of Portimão during the morning of this Wednesday

The 16th anniversary of Banco Alimentar do Algarve was marked this Wednesday, March 1st, in Portimão, with the activity “Less Waste = Better Environment”.

The activity consisted of the distribution of biscuits through the streets of the city centre, carried out by students from DUAL, the Professional Qualification service of the Luso-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, accompanied by volunteers.

The action took place during the morning, symbolizing the biscuits, made by DUAL students, one third of the food wasted worldwide.

Created on March 1, 2007, Banco Alimentar do Algarve is currently the fourth largest in the country, distributing around 3.500 tons of food per year.

Currently, the Banco Alimentar do Algarve supports around 7.500 beneficiaries in the western part of the country alone and counts, for this purpose, on the collaboration of 18 commercial areas, where the daily collection of surpluses is carried out, gathered in the Portimão warehouse, located in the area from Coca Maravilhas and which started operating about 11 years ago.

To carry out its work in Portimão, the institution has a fully electric car and a distribution van, in addition to six permanent volunteers and 550 on the occasion of the campaigns it promotes, which results in an average of a thousand tons of food collected annually. .
