The Prime Minister believes that this year will be «of strong recovery and growth in tourist activity» in the Algarve. The perspective was left this Wednesday, March 1, during the inauguration of the new PSP police station in Vila Real de Santo António, in the old Customs building, next to the Guadiana River.

António Costa participated in this session, after having already had two other public agendas: in Montenegro (Faro), at the launch of a construction project for 49 houses, and in Olhão, where he participated in the presentation of the preliminary study for the future Metrobus.

The prime minister took advantage of the inauguration of the new PSP police station, in VRSA, to say that one of the differentiating tourist elements in the Algarve is its security.

«Surely one of the attractive factors of the Algarve, in addition to the charm of its people, the beauty of the landscapes and the excellent cuisine, is that we have here the conditions for safe tourism», considered the head of government.

The fact that Portugal is «constantly considered one of the most peaceful countries» is not, for António Costa, «a work of chance»; it results, rather, “from the great work of the security forces at every hour, every day, throughout the whole year”.

«This factor is essential and particularly important in a region as touristy as the Algarve», added the Prime Minister.

With these perspectives of a good tourist year, for example with new routes already announced at Faro, Costa also left a warning: the work, namely of the security forces, will be «more demanding».

Regarding the new PSP police station, inaugurated this Wednesday, he stressed that it will allow fulfilling a dream that dates back to 2002.

«Today is a truly special and symbolic day for Vila Real de Santo António and for the Algarve. It's not just the act: I'm also talking about the need for this special force that needed infrastructure to match its importance», said Álvaro Araújo, mayor of Vila Real de Santo António.

In his speech, the mayor also asked for an «increase in policing in the streets of the city».

«People feel safe when they see the PSP, it is a fact that we cannot deny», he added.

The ceremony was also attended by José Luís Carneiro, Minister of Internal Administration, Magina da Silva, national director of the PSP, and Isabel Oneto, Secretary of State for Internal Administration.
