Portimão students up to the 9th grade now have free meals in schools

The measure will last until the end of the school year and involves a global amount of around 280 thousand euros

Free meals, support for study visits and the exceptional attribution of over 19 study grants to Higher Education students are some of the measures that the Municipality of Portimão has approved as part of an extraordinary package in the area of ​​Education that is intended to help students and the families.

The first measure, which came into force yesterday, determines that meals are free for all students from pre-school to 9th grade and secondary school B-level students, with the Municipality assuming the respective charges, through the transfer of funds to School Groupings.

The measure will last until the end of the school year and is based on the average number of students currently having lunch in school cafeterias, involving a global amount of around 280 thousand euros.

 

With regard to support for study visits that take place during the current school year and involve the different levels of education, the Municipality will allocate to each Grouping of Schools the amount of 10 thousand euros, in a total of 50 thousand euros, from in order to alleviate the financial burden on families.

Finally, and in addition to the 35 scholarships for the academic year 2022/2023 and opportunely deliberated by the City Council of Portimão, a further 19 scholarships will be awarded to students who, although not selected, meet the requirements of the respective regulation, in the amount of 38 thousand euros, which makes up 54 scholarships, with a total value of 108 thousand euros.

The exceptional measures were proposed by the Mayor of Portimão Isilda Gomes and previously discussed with representatives of the educational community that make up the Municipal Council of Education.
