Volta ao Algarve marks the start of a full-fledged Carnival of events

The Tour of the Algarve by bicycle, which starts this Wednesday, February 15th, in Portimão, and ends on Sunday with a time trial on the roads of the municipality of Lagoa, is the starting gun for a week of great animation in the south of country, and which will have the highest moment in the return of the Carnival parade to Avenida José da Costa Mealha, in Loulé.

Thus, from the 15th to the 19th of February, the 49th Tour of the Algarve bring to the country a platoon of world excellence. There are 174 cyclists pre-registered, including 12 teams from the WorldTour, the first division of the International Cycling Union, and 20 cyclists from the top-100 of the world rankings, some of them defending champions.

But even with the presence of so many international stars, it is in João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates), one of the most successful Portuguese cyclists of the last decade, that the greatest national hopes are deposited.

Competition at a very high level is guaranteed in the only Portuguese race on the UCI ProSeries circuit, an event that takes to the country and the world the spring landscapes of the Algarve intersected by the 791,9 kilometers of roads that make up the race.

The tourist projection of the region takes place through the transmission of the Volta ao Algarve live on RTP1, RTP Africa and RTP Internacional, on the GCN+ platform in around 200 countries, on Eurosport in 67 countries and on Direct TV in 10 countries in Latin America.

 

 

O Loulé Carnival is awaited by all with great expectations and the organization foresees a full house in the parades on the 19th, 20th and 21st of February, from 15:00 am.

Residents and visitors of all ages waited two years to be able to go out again and celebrate the oldest corso in the country, which will feature 14 floats, 10 animation groups and three samba schools, for a total of close to 600 entertainers and between 60 and 80 thousand revelers.

Caricatures of António Guterres, Vladimir Putin, Volodymyr Zelensky, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Greta Thunberg and António Costa were invited to parade along with many other puppets of world-renowned figures, all of them created locally for the biggest Carnival in the Algarve, and where even King Charles III will enter the satire.

Organized by the Athletics Association, with the support of the Algarve Tourism Board, the International Cross of Almond Blossoms it is one of the oldest cross-country races in the country and every year attracts hundreds of followers to the Açoteias circuit, in Albufeira.

The only national test of the specialty integrated in the circuit World Athletics Cross Country with Gold level takes place on the 26th of February, from 10:00 am.
