A speed boat carrying drugs deliberately rammed a Maritime Police vessel and injured two elements of this security force who were following it, during an operation to combat drug trafficking that took place this evening, off the coast of the Algarve, in which three men and seized bundles of drugs.

According to the National Maritime Authority, the Maritime Police, which carried out the operation in collaboration with the Portuguese Navy, detected a high-speed vessel, suspected of being linked to drug trafficking.

The Maritime Police managed to approach this boat and detain the three men who were following it.

Meanwhile, a second high-speed vessel was detected, which was dropping drug bales in the water.

“Upon realizing the presence of the authorities on the spot, the suspicious vessel deliberately rammed one of the Maritime Police vessels”, according to AMN.

«The vessel collided with such violence that it passed over it from one side to the other, damaging the Maritime Police vessel, putting the lives of the officers at risk who, fortunately, escaped with injuries. Even so, with two elements injured and two others lying in the water, the Maritime Police reacted and detained the three suspects, raising the general alert. Unsuccessful, the vessel later put to flight», added the same source.

The members of the Maritime Police were rescued and «transported, stable and free of danger, by a Portuguese Air Force aircraft to a hospital unit».

The drug bundles were collected and handed over to the Judiciary Police, as well as the three men arrested.

The Maritime Authority also emphasizes that, «in the last two months, there has been a greater degree of violence in the reactions of traffickers».
