Rector of UAlg joins entourage to explore new partnerships in the USA

Partnership also represents «the future commitment of the Algarve and California regions, Hayward-Faro, with higher education, research and innovation»

Paulo Águas, rector of the University of Algarve, and Alexandra Teodósio, vice-rector for Internationalization and Sustainable Development, were part of a delegation, together with representatives of the Municipality of Faro, who traveled to the United States of America (USA) to explore new partnerships with American higher education institutions.

UAlg representatives participated, on the 21st of February, in the event “Contrasting Science Education and Science Research in Portugal and the US” at the University of California, which was attended by Randy Schekman, Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2013, the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education of Portugal Elvira Fortunato, and also the Consul General of Portugal in San Francisco Pedro Pinto and the Portuguese Ambassador to the USA Francisco Duarte Lopes.

On the 22nd of February, the general collaboration protocol between the UAlg and the State University of California, in East Bay, Hayward, was signed by the president Cathy Sandeen and by the rector Paulo Águas.

This session was attended by Mark Salinas, “City Mayor” of Hayward, Paulo Santos, vice-president of the City Council of Faro, and Elvira Fortunato, Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education.

According to the UAlg, this moment also represents «the future commitment of the Algarve and California regions, Hayward-Faro, with higher education, research and innovation».

On the same day, the delegation also participated in the opening ceremonies for the restoration of the centenary Portuguese Júlio Brás Park, in Hayworthe, and in the «Portugal Tech Talks» seminar, promoted by AICEP – Portuguese Trade & Investment Agency in SF, in San Francisco.

Finally, on the 23rd of February, meetings were held with leaders and professors from the University of California, East Bay, to implement future collaboration in terms of online teaching, in areas such as tourism and engineering, among others.
