PR expresses “indignant repudiation” for xenophobic attacks on a young Nepalese woman in Olhão

The President of the Republic said today that he spoke with the mayor of Olhão and with people close to the young Nepalese man who was attacked a few days ago, to whom he expressed “indignant repudiation for an act that reflects unacceptable xenophobia and intolerance”.

Speaking to the Lusa agency, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa explained that he made these contacts on Friday after the attacks became public through a video released on the internet.

The head of state considered that this act, “performed by other young people, Portuguese” constitutes “an alert to parents and educators regarding the risk of a climate that is anything but democratic”.

At stake are the attacks committed by a group of young people against a man, on January 25, which became public after sharing a video on social networks, where the immigrant appears lying on the ground, in a defensive position, trying to protect himself. kicks, punches and sticks thrown by the aggressors, whose faces are not clearly visible because they are wearing hoods.

The attacks on the immigrant are being investigated by the PSP and the Minister of Internal Administration, José Luís Carneiro, said today that "a nucleus of people who were in that group who attacked in a barbaric way" the citizen was identified, adding that the PSP is investigating take steps together with the Public Prosecutor's Office to gather information that will make it possible to hold the perpetrators of the aggression accountable.

“These are unacceptable behaviors that must be exemplarily punished”, defended José Luís Carneiro.

The Minister of Internal Administration also added that the PSP detected “other circumstances equivalent to those that occurred with this young man”, noting that the investigations are at an “advanced stage”.

In addition to the repeated attacks, the group also stole the victim's backpack, who did not file a complaint, while she begged them to stop attacking her and at least return the documents she kept in her backpack.

The investigation is also trying to determine how many elements made up the group and the involvement of each of them in the crimes committed.
