PAN/Olhão repudiates «intolerable and unacceptable» aggression against Nepalese in the streets of the city

Through its deputy to the Municipal Assembly

PAN/Olhão went public to repudiate the «intolerable and inadmissible episode of "gratuitous violence" that took place in the streets of the city», referring to the aggression and theft of a Nepalese immigrant by a dozen young people from Olhão, in the middle of a public road , on the 24th of January.

«I want to express the most vehement rejection of the violent attacks and theft against Nepalese citizens in Olhão and reaffirm the rejection of any and all types of violence, discrimination and intolerance against any person», says Alexandre Pereira, deputy for People-Animais-Natureza in Olhão Municipal Assembly.

This week, videos appeared on the internet of several young people violently attacking, with sticks, punches and kicks, an Asian man, whose hair they even tried to burn, a situation that the President of the Republic has also repudiated.

«Torture, xenophobia and violence cannot have a place in Portugal! We have to be a country with total respect for human rights, where hate crimes are duly punished, and where all people, regardless of their context, feel safe!», defends the PAN of Olhão, through its municipal deputy.

The local elected official of this party promises to “continue to work for a society that fights for the guarantee and protection of the human rights of all people, regardless of “ancestry, sex, race, language, territory of origin, religion, political or ideological convictions, education , economic situation, social condition or sexual orientation”» and reinforce «dialogue with civil society associations and collectives that work in this direction on a daily basis».

“Unfortunately, this was not an isolated act, and there are other reports of attacks against Asian immigrants. Cases like this deserve our complete repudiation and urgently require that effective measures be taken to ensure that no one is a victim of such violence and that the people of Olhanense and those who visit us can feel safe in Olhão», concludes Alexandre Pereira.
