The Minister of Health today denied that it is planned to close public maternity hospitals and reiterated that the current model of rotation of the functioning of these services is having positive results, being evaluated again at the end of the first quarter.

"There will not be and is not foreseen the closure of any public maternity hospital", said Manuel Pizarro to journalists, reacting to the information advanced on Tuesday by RTP about the existence of a new proposal from the Commission for Monitoring the Response in Urgency of Gynecology that could lead to the closure of eight obstetrics and gynecology emergencies, serving only pregnant women with at least 22 weeks and referred.

Speaking on the sidelines of the presentation of the report “The State of Health in Prisons in the WHO European Region” [World Health Organization], at the headquarters of Infarmed, in Lisbon, the minister reiterated that “the system is working well, safely for professionals, but, above all, comfort, safety and quality for pregnant women».

Despite the guarantee, there are maternity hospitals working with constraints. In the case of Portimão, the emergency service of gynecology and obstetrics and the delivery block will be closed at the weekend, every 15 days, until the end of March.
