ABC researcher publishes book on thyroid and Covid-19

The publication focuses on the relationship between thyroid and Covid-19 and aims to provide new clinical and epidemiological data on the impact of the pandemic on the thyroid endocrine axis

Marco Campinho, researcher at the Algarve Biomedical Center-Research Institute (ABC-RI) at the University of Algarve (UAlg), has just launched the eBook (only in Dutch at the moment) The Thyroid and Covid-19, published by Frontiers.

The publication focuses on the relationship between thyroid and Covid-19 and aims to provide new clinical and epidemiological data on the impact of the pandemic on the thyroid endocrine axis.

Reporting that diseases such as hypothyroidism, subacute destructive thyroiditis, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, thyroiditis associated with autoimmune diseases or other serious diseases, are among the thyroid abnormalities most frequently associated with COVID-19, the investigator raises some questions: should we screen thyroid dysfunction during Covid-19? Is Covid-19 infection more frequent or more severe in patients with thyroid disorders? Can Covid-19 induce thyroid dysfunction or thyroid autoimmunity? Can thyroid disease affect the prognosis of patients with Covid-19? Can Covid-19 vaccines affect thyroid function? What is the best way to treat an affected patient?

According to the UAlg, "bearing in mind that the thyroid is one of the organs with the most molecular receptors that the Covid-19 virus uses to infect human cells, understanding these aspects and their impact on human health is of crucial importance".

Focusing on recent investigations into the interaction between thyroid and Covid-19, the e-book seeks to reflect on some of these issues, bringing original scientific work on the subject to the public.
