INE: Tourist accommodation sector exceeds pre-pandemic levels in January

The British market accounted for 14,8% of total overnight stays from non-residents

The tourist accommodation sector surpassed pre-pandemic levels in January, with 1,5 million guests and 3,5 million overnight stays, 3,2% and 6,5% more than in the same month of 2020, announced today the INE.

In a statement released today, the National Statistics Institute (INE) states that the increases in the number of guests and overnight stays in January accelerated to 72,5% and 74,5% compared to the same month of 2022, respectively, against year-on-year increases of 45,5% and 45,8% in December 2022.

INE also mentions that in January, the internal market contributed with 1,2 million overnight stays (38,7% more) and the external markets totaled 2,3 million overnight stays (101,3% more), adding that compared to the same In the month of 2020, there were increases of 10,0% in overnight stays from residents and 4,8% from non-residents.

The British market accounted for 14,8% of total overnight stays from non residents, followed by the German (with a share of 11,3%) and Spanish (with 10,2%).

The institute also mentions that the net bed occupancy rate in tourist accommodation establishments (29,4%) increased by 10,9 percentage points in January (against 7,9 percentage points in December) and that the net room occupancy rate (37,0%) increased by 13,6 percentage points (against 9,3 percentage points in December).

In January, 35,5% of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or did not register guests, against 33,0% in December.
