The Algarve historian Fernando Pessanha, senior culture technician at the Municipality of Vila Real de Santo António, and Major General João Vieira Borges, president of the Portuguese Military History Commission, were, on the 7th of February, sworn in as new academics of the Maritime History Class at Academia de Marinha, cultural body of the Portuguese Navy with scientific autonomy.
The formal inauguration took place in a ceremony presided over by Admiral Francisco Vidal Abreu, president of this academy, whose mission is to promote and develop studies related to history, letters, arts and sciences related to maritime activities.
Fernando Pessanha and João Vieira Borges were handed the diplomas and identifications of corresponding members of the Academia de Marinha.
According to information provided by the official page of this cultural body of the Portuguese Navy, awarded as an Honorary Member of the Military Order of Sant'Iago da Espada by the President of the Republic, the Academia de Marinha only “admits as members personalities with intellectual, scientific or of a superior cultural level, whose activity, professional or otherwise, is directly or indirectly related to the sea or maritime activities”.
