49th edition of Volta ao Algarve starts tomorrow

First stage takes participants from Portimão to Lagos on a 200,2 kilometer route

The 49th edition of the Volta ao Algarve kicks off this Wednesday, February 15th, with the 1st stage Portimão – Lagos, a journey of 200,2 kilometers (km). 

The 2nd stage, on the 16th, leaves Sagres to Alto da Fóia, 189,4 km, followed by the 3rd stage on the 17th, which leaves Faro towards Tavira – 201,1 km. On the 18th, it is Albufeira's turn to host the 4th stage, which starts from Avenida dos Descobrimentos to Alto do Malhão, 177,9 km, with the 5th and last stage Lagoa – Lagoa being an individual time trial of 24,4, XNUMX km.

The Volta ao Algarve is a reference event from the beginning of the international cycling season that continues to be part of the UCI ProSeries circuit, the second most important on the world cycling circuit.

This year's edition has, once again, a luxury squad made up of 25 teams, of which 12 WorldTeams, 4 ProTeams and XNUMX Continentals.

The “Algarvia”, as it is still known by many, will count on the presence of 20 riders from the world's top 100 and João Almeida and Rui Costa, the two Portuguese cyclists with the best results in the last decade, who promise to fight for the best places of the leaderboard.

On the 18th, when the tour passes through Albufeira, there is also an Open Day, called “Cycling goes to School”. This is a program of parallel activities within the scope of the Tour that, throughout the morning, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, invites the youngest (children aged 3 to 12 years) to participate in a timed Gymkhana, inflatable track, Balance Bikes race and which also aims to capture new talent.

This year, in addition to Eurosport, responsible for broadcasting hundreds of hours of television about the Volta, taking the image of the Algarve to various parts of the world.

The big news is that, for the first time in many years, the race will be broadcast on an open channel, on RTP1, multiplying the number of spectators in Portugal and in Portuguese communities, through RTP Africa and RTP Internacional.
