1st meeting of the landscape management pilot area was «greatly attended» in Monchique

AIGP “Área Piloto de Monchique” stems from the Monchique and Silves Landscape Reorganization and Management Program

A first meeting to publicize the Integrated Landscape Management Area – Pilot Area of Monchique (AIGP-APM), which took place last Friday, February 3rd, was «greatly attended» and served to discuss the options for the creation of the AIGP management entity.

This Integrated Landscape Management Area – Monchique Green Corridor (formerly known as the Monchique Pilot Area) aims to «change the situation of high vulnerability to rural fires».

This AIGP covers the urban center of the village of Monchique, the area of Caldas de Monchique, and some villages are also included, such as the village of Alcaria do Peso, Peso, Cabeça de Águia, Mata Porcas, Pomar Velho, Vale, Ceiceira, Meia Viana, Ginjeira and Barranco do Bath, occupying a continuous area of about 1.217,95 hectares.

To support its implementation, various financial instruments are foreseen, for example the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), which provides support for interventions of 100% of the overall eligible amount.

In this session, which was attended by the city council executive and the technicians responsible for the process, information on this program and membership of the future management entity were presented.

According to the Chamber of Monchique, «the event, which was very popular, was represented by institutions and organized groups with a direct interest in rural, agricultural and forestry development in the area of intervention, at a local and regional level».

One of the people present was Castelão Rodrigues, regional director of the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests.

According to the municipality, "topics such as the main geographical characteristics of the intervention area and vulnerabilities to rural fires, the options for creating the AIGP- CVM Management Entity and the advantages of grouping rural landowners and the objectives of the transformation of the forest landscape and financial support from the PRR to rural landowners».

The session presented and discussed the various options for creating the AIGP-APM management entity.

For the municipality, the best path is «local associations, given the business option» as it is the one «that brings the most advantages and that best defends the interests of the populations, owners and local actors».

In this sense, the «City Council, as the promoter of the AIGP-CVM, in addition to being co-responsible, will carry out the primary function of transferring knowledge, supporting procedural management and providing technical assistance throughout all phases of the project».

Thus, with the aim of constituting the association, at the end of the session, «forms for pre-adherence of rural landowners to the future management entity» were distributed.

The City Council says that it «reiterated the importance of the adhesion of the greatest possible number of owners, at this stage».

Enrollment remains open during the month of February, and can be done here

The “Monchique Pilot Area” AIGP stems from the Monchique and Silves Landscape Reorganization and Management Program (PRGP SMS), approved in 2020, and has a total funding of 6,4 million euros, for the years 2020 to 2039, resulting from the PDR2020 and the Environmental Fund.
