The Vila Real de Santo António Council is finalizing the purchase for 1,9 million (1.926.000) euros of an aparthotel with 29 apartments, in the former Monte Fino tourist village, in the parish of Monte Gordo, to guarantee housing solutions for homeless people and families.

Second revealed to Sul Informação Álvaro Araújo, mayor of VRSA, the acquisition of this aparthotel, «which was in insolvency», should be concluded «at the beginning of 2023» and will be carried out in the same way as those that allowed the handing over of the key to 70 houses to as many others families, in December, that is, «within the 1st Law Programme, with 100% financing».

«The apartments are in Monte Fino, in the parish of Monte Gordo. They will be destined to homeless people, for social reintegration. It will be excellent!», revealed the mayor of Vila Real.

At the same time, the Chamber has “another project underway, which involves the old CP dormitory, which is not as run down as that, despite needing to be rehabilitated. That is what we will do, with the support of the PRR. Let's see what typology it will fit into and for what kind of audience».

«It is another great opportunity and we are going to be attentive to the market, to buildings that are available, to acquire them and, in a way, to control the market, in order to have affordable rentals, including for the middle class», summarized Álvaro Araújo.

These acquisitions are being carried out within the scope of the VRSA's Local Housing Strategy (ELH), which covers 2139 people integrated in 824 households, with an estimated investment of around 107 million euros, mostly in municipal promotion (87 million euros).

«We are going to rehabilitate the council's social housing buildings, but within that housing stock, there are buildings that are already private. The 1st Law will also support the rehabilitation of these properties », he explained.

«We have plans to build housing from scratch, around one hundred apartments. But we have to be very careful with that, because the PRR only finances 100% if everything is completed and if people are living in their homes, with contracts signed, until the end of June 2026. guaranteed, the Chamber cannot move forward, because it has no money», concluded Álvaro Araújo.
