Via Algarviana reissues guide and launches mobile application

There are also five new pedestrian routes on the Via Algarviana in the municipality of Monchique

Via Algarviana has just launched a new edition of the paper guide, a mobile application and five new pedestrian routes of the Via Algarviana in the municipality of Monchique.

Both the reissue of the paper guide and the mobile application are tools intended to help users of the various pedestrian routes in the Via Algarviana territory, both hikers and mountain bikers.

The new GR13 guide brings together detailed information on each of the 14 sectors that make up the approximately 300 kilometers (km) of this great route, from Alcoutim to Cabo de São Vicente.

In addition, it includes information on the nine connections to the main axis of the GR13.

In the guide, hikers will find the map of the itinerary, the technical sheet, description and points of interest. According to Via Algarviana, «all information has been reviewed and improved based on previous versions of the guide and giving voice to the suggestions of the many hikers and mountain bikers from around the world who have traveled the interior of the Algarve».

Given the international demand, the guide was republished in five languages (Portuguese, English, French, German and Dutch) and distributed in an original format, which instead of a single volume consists of a set of leaflets, corresponding to the various sectors.

In this way, each day hikers or mountain bikers can carry only the necessary information in their hands, leaving the rest in the backpack.

The set of various leaflets is stored in a cotton bag, easier to store in luggage than a conventional book.

The guide was already available for download, in digital format, on Via Algarviana website and can now also be ordered through a online form. The paper version is also free, you only pay the shipping costs.

Also today, the Via Algarviana application is officially launched. The main highlight goes to the possibility of following the routes using the application's own maps, even in places where there is no internet network.

In addition to this functionality, the application has all the detailed information about each sector of the GR13, as well as the connections and small route routes complementary to the Via Algarviana. Other functionalities include the possibility to download the files with the tracks and to report an anomaly on the route, allowing everyone to contribute to identifying and solving any problem more quickly.

As of today, it is also possible to discover five new pedestrian routes in the Monchique mountains: three small routes and two connections to the GR13 –Via Algarviana, which reinforce the existing network.

It is possible to download the leaflets and tracks of each one of them: PR7 MCQ – Percurso das Hortas (8,2 km), PR8 MCQ – Along the Alferce Paths (7,8 km), PR9 MCQ – Entre o Vale e o Castelo (7,2 km), Connection 10 – Via Algarviana (Monchique) to Alferce (11,7 km) and Connection 11 – Alferce to Via Algarviana (Monchique) (11,5 km).

Also noteworthy is the edition of the Guide to the Thematic Routes, available in Portuguese and English, which brings together essential information and maps for exploring the Algarve through four themes that are incursions into the natural and cultural heritage of the region: Smuggler (Alcoutim), Water (Loulé), Monumental Trees and Geology (both in Monchique).

The guide It is available in digital format, for download, and also in paper form.
