After the arrest of three men for robberies in Sotavento Algarvio, the PSP and the GNR continue to work to identify more individuals involved in the crime and recover more stolen material.

The three men, aged 27, 38 and 42, of Moldovan nationality, were arrested last Tuesday, January 24, in flagrante delicto, in a house in the Quarteira area.

The investigation began in January 2022, when the Tavira PSP identified a wave of burglaries in this city «and realized that it would be the same group, since the way of acting and the residences chosen as the target of the thefts had many similarities» , explains Deputy Commissioner Catarina Monteiro, noting that the stolen material was then sent abroad.

However, thefts spread throughout Sotavento, mainly in the municipalities of Loulé, Tavira and Faro, which made PSP and GNR choose to develop a joint investigation.

According to António Ramos, captain of Communication and Public Relations of the Territorial Command of the GNR de Faro, it is «an organized group with some expertise in approaching and carrying out the practice of this crime of theft from inside homes».

Regarding the way of acting, the captain explains that «one was driving, at the drop-off point the rest of the group approached the residences and then they had immediately designated a collection point».

«The resource to enter the houses was varied and whenever there were obstacles, they resorted to specific tools. When they detected an obstacle such as a dog, they used pepper spray to stun it», says the officer.

As for the stolen material – after four searches were carried out, two at home and others in vehicles – 14500 euros in cash, several jewels, small appliances and material that the suspects used to commit criminal offenses were seized, such as binoculars, angle grinders, pepper spray, among others.

«So far, with the material that we have seized, we have been able to link about three dozen residences, but many of the thefts have not been reported to us», says Catarina Monteiro, reinforcing that only part of the material has already been delivered to the owners.

Thus, the sub-commissioner appeals to those who have not yet made the complaints, formalize them, and go to the District Command of the PSP of Faro to identify your assets.

«Taking into account that much of the stolen material has not yet been associated with any process under investigation, both by the PSP and by the GNR, we appeal to all citizens who reside in the Algarve and who have, eventually, been the target of theft, and not the have denounced, that they proceed with the denouncement and that they go, within 8 to 10 days, to the PSP of Faro for eventual recognition and recovery of stolen objects», concludes Catarina Monteiro.

Still according to Captain António Ramos, «there is no record of violent practice in these crimes», which took place in houses located on the outskirts of urban areas, at the end of the day and beginning of the night.
