Olhão is already part of the management of the municipalities section “Smart Cities”

The Municipality of Olhão is, since this Tuesday, January 17th, part of the “Smart Cities” Municipalities Section of the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities.

The structure meeting, which took place in Coimbra, and in which the municipality of Olhão was represented by Ricardo Calé, vice-president, addressed topics such as the Summit of Mayors and the Portuguese representation at the World Fair of Smart Cities.

On the table was also the Smart Tour, a tour that will cover several municipalities and intermunicipal communities across the country, so that mayors can learn about and share the good practices developed in the national territory in this matter.

At the end of the meeting, Ricardo Calé was satisfied with the result of the work.

«The digital transition is, perhaps, the greatest goal of this generation, and it is crucial to place technology at the service of quality of life in cities, even making use of the community funds made available for this area. In Olhão, this work has been done, in the sense of using technology to make our city increasingly friendly to people».

The European Union defines Smart Cities as “a set of systems and people interacting intelligently, using energy, materials, services and resources in a sustainable way”.

In general terms, the municipality recalls that it can be said that smart cities are those that invest in technology to improve municipal management and provide citizens with a better quality of life and sustainability of spaces.

In Olhão, examples of these measures are the creation of the Occurrence Management Platform, the implementation of light mobility in the city, video surveillance, the provision of free Wi-Fi in various areas of the city, or the modernization of public lighting through the use of LED lighting. with telemetry.

The Municipality is already working on the implementation of smart parking, as well as the use of artificial intelligence to optimize urban waste collection routes.
