Navy warns of worsening maritime unrest, IPMA puts Algarve on yellow warning

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) has placed the Algarve under yellow warning, from 6:00 am on Sunday, January 8th, to 0:00 am on Monday, the 9th, due to maritime unrest. The Navy has also warned of a «considerable worsening of weather conditions». 

According to the IPMA, “on the west coast, northwest waves of 4 to 5 meters are forecast”.

In a statement, the Navy and the National Maritime Authority warn of the worsening situation, the entire western coast of mainland Portugal, recommending, "in particular the fishing and recreational boating community that is at sea, the eventual return to the safest port closeness and the adoption of precautionary measures".

«It is also recommended to reinforce the mooring and surveillance of moored and anchored vessels and it is also advised that seafarers maintain a permanent state of vigilance and monitor the evolution of the meteorological situation, through the navigation warnings and the meteorological forecast of the Institute Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA), as well as other information provided by the Port Authority on the conditions of access to ports, avoiding going out to sea until conditions improve», it also reads.

The population in general is advised against taking walks along the coastline and on the beaches, as well as taking part in activities in areas exposed to sea turmoil or affected by the surf. In particular, access and stay close to the cliffs and cliffs should be avoided.
