Alte: Water network in Monte Ruivo and Azinhal is «one of the most important works of the last decade»

Consignment and launch of the contract for the public water supply network took place yesterday, January 25

The population of Monte Ruivo and Azinhal, two towns in the parish of Alte, in Loulé, witnessed yesterday, January 25th, the assignment and launch of the contract for the public water supply network that will benefit more than 300 residents.

«This is certainly one of the works, if not the most important work in Alte in the last decade», stressed António Martins. president of the Parish Council of Alte, underlining the value of this equipment for those who, on a daily basis, face all the constraints inherent in accessing water through public fountains, holes or wells. And also the high amounts paid by those who order a water tank from firefighters or companies, «in the order of 200 euros per month», which will no longer be a problem for those who live here.

«Water is fundamental for the population of the interior, for its economy, and it is fundamental for people to want to come here. It is one of the imbalance factors between the interior and the coast», stressed António Martins.

Vítor Aleixo, mayor of Loulé, also recalled the important work carried out over the years with regard to this type of infrastructure.

«We no longer have many places in the municipality of Loulé, with so many inhabitants, that still need a water distribution network», he recalled. «The Loulé municipality has made an effort in recent years to respond to this basic and natural need that exists within the territory», he said.

The investment by the Câmara de Loulé in these locations, in excess of 933 thousand euros, thus aims to guarantee the supply of drinking water in quantity and quality to the inhabitants, which will be ensured by extending the existing pipelines to the east of the area to be intervened, with the origin of the water the Benafim reservoir.

The contract, with a length of more than 16 kilometers of pipelines, will run from the connection point, west of the town of Sobradinho, and will include the towns of Cascabulho, Soalheira, Monte Ruivo, Azinhal, Sítio das Casas, Assumadas and Monte Curral.

The estimated execution period is approximately one year.

During the ceremony, Vítor Aleixo also warned of the problems inherent in the proliferation of intensive agriculture, with high water consumption, particularly in a context of water scarcity.

«The population has to become aware of these problems and help the public authorities to regulate that type of economic activity, agriculture that consumes a lot of water. It's just that we no longer have water to feed the agriculture that exists today», he reiterated.

In addition to changes in the PDM, Vítor Aleixo believes that «public pressure and political pressure» could also be decisive in this matter.
