Algarve to have Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction

The PRRRC of the Algarve promotes the articulation of local entities

A Memorandum for the Constitution of the Regional Platform for the Reduction of the Risk of Catastrophes in the Algarve (PRRRC do Algarve) will be signed this Thursday, the 19th, by AMAL – Comunidade Intermunicipal do Algarve and several national and regional entities. The signature will take place, from 10 am, at AMAL headquarters, in Faro.

The Algarve PRRRC promotes the articulation of local entities and citizens' associations in joint action, at a regional level, in the face of a potential risk, based on a prevention and safety strategy, through knowledge, innovation, awareness, education, communication and civil society participation.

According to AMAL, it also aims to develop activities to reduce the risk of disasters, increasing resilience in the community and in the different structures of the various sectors of activity.

The Memorandum will be signed by several entities, taking into account its objectives and dimension. The project involves several and varied partners, who also gave their contribution in a preparatory phase, namely representatives of the 16 municipalities of the Algarve, Agency for the Integrated Management of Rural Fires (AGIF), Águas do Algarve (AdA), Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve (CHUA), National Republican Guard (GNR), Safe Communities Portugal (SCP), University of Algarve (UAlg), among others.

The Regional Platform for the Reduction of the Risk of Catastrophes in the Algarve (PRRRC do Algarve) is part of the Resilient Region 2.0 (RR2.0) project and results from a partnership between AMAL, ANEPC (National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection) and LabX – Center for Innovation in the Public Sector of the AMA (Agency for Administrative Modernization), whose Protocol had already been signed in 2021.

This is a governance solution that is framed in international regulations, namely in the Sendai Framework, and in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, intending to respond to national regulations, such as the National Strategy for Preventive Civil Protection 2030, and to support regional instruments, such as the Intermunicipal Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change in the Algarve (PIAAC).
