Algarve and Baixo Alentejo under yellow warning due to maritime agitation

Lower temperatures are coming

The districts of Faro and Beja will be, from 18:00 on Monday, January 16, under yellow warning due to maritime unrest, announced the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA). The weather, in mainland Portugal, will be influenced by the “Fien” depression.

This notice will be valid until 6:00 am on Wednesday, the 18th.

According to the IPMA, «northwest waves of 4 to 5 meters» are forecast for both districts.

As of this Monday, the weather in Portugal will be influenced, according to the IPMA, "by the joint action of an anticyclone located in the Azores region and the digging of the FIEN depression, named by the State Meteorological Agency. of Spain (AEMET), south of the British Isles".

This depression will bring more cold: «a maritime air mass of polar origin».

«Thus, on the 16th, an intensification of the west/northwest wind is expected, which will blow strongly on the west coast, with gusts of up to 80 kilometers per hour (km/h), and very strong in the highlands, with gusts that could exceed 100 km/h. As a result, sea turmoil will increase, with waves expected from the 16th from the northwest with a significant height of 5 to 7 meters, and which could reach maximum heights of up to 12 meters, on the west coast, especially north of Cabo Raso ».

The depression will also bring rain, but «especially in the North and Center regions and that will be snow on the 16th in the highest points of Serra da Estrela, dropping to 900/1100 meters in altitude in the North and Center on the 17th and for the 600/800 meters on the 18th, and could accumulate significant amounts.».

For the Algarve, for now, the IPMA predicts a 70% probability of «rain/showers» on Tuesday, the 17th.

The temperature, moreover, will suffer a decrease, which will be more pronounced on the 17th and 18th, with minimum temperature values below 5°C in most of the territory, being between -5 and 0°C in the interior North and Centre, and between 5 and 8°C in coastal regions.

The maximum temperature should fluctuate between 5 and 12°C in most of the territory, with up to 14°C on the coast of the southern region and may be below 5°C in some parts of the interior North and Centre.

The cold, concludes the IPMA, «will be accentuated by the strong wind that will be felt».
