The President of the Republic this Thursday recalled the gypsies who "gave their lives" for national independence and regretted the discrimination they have been subjected to in Portugal.

«By remembering so many Portuguese, from so many origins, who got involved in the revolutionary movement, the President of the Republic also wants to remember the Portuguese of gypsy ethnicity who, as King D. João IV himself recognized at the time, gave their lives for our national independence» , wrote Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in a message evocative of the Day of Restoration of Independence that is marked this Thursday.
