Faro “under water” after 19,1 millimeters of rain in just one hour

There were occurrences in almost all municipalities in the Algarve

Flooded streets and squares, flooded garages, cut roads, chaos in car traffic are some of the consequences of the heavy rain that was felt from 18 pm yesterday, Sunday, a little over the whole of the Algarve, but which this morning hit especially in the municipality of Faro.

In the Algarve capital, and in just one hour, «between 7 am and 00 am, 8 millimeters of precipitation were recorded», revealed to Sul Informação the District Operations and Relief Command of Faro.

In the area around the CP station, on Estrada de São Luís and in Horta do Ferragial, the water exceeded half a meter in height, while on the street of PSP and Jardim da Alameda the pavement gave way, opening a hole and forcing the area to be sealed to traffic. Around 10:15 am, many arteries were still cut in the most affected areas.

«The municipality with the most occurrences is Faro, with 59, all recorded this morning. We are essentially talking about surface flooding, which affected adjacent infrastructure», that is, the ground floors of buildings and garages, according to the same source.

Trees have also fallen.

Em Faro, on Rua da Porta Nova, in Vila-Adentro de Faro, the most serious situation was recorded: «the fall of a facade of a vacant house on top of a car», although without causing victims.

Besides, there are streets that remain impassable, in Faro and circulation within the city and on the access roads, including the Northern Variant, are chaotic. Who does not even have to enter Faro, it is advisable to avoid doing it this morning.

 

 

Other situations of some seriousness, among the 107 occurrences that took place since yesterday evening, in the Algarve, were the rescue of two people who were trapped by the water «and asked for help to get out» and a fire in a hotel unit of Monte Gordo, caused by lightning, «quickly extinguished by the firefighters of Vila Real de Santo António.

Loulé was the second municipality most affected by the weather, with 12 occurrences, although, in this case, these "recorded yesterday", Sunday.

Like Sul Informação realized, this Sunday there were floods in Baixa de Quarteira.

This is followed by Albufeira (9), São Brás de Alportel and VRSA (6), Tavira (5), Silves, Lagoa, Olhão and Castro (2), and Monchique and Alcoutim (1).

"There were four municipalities without any occurrence, namely Portimão, Lagos, Vila do Bispo and Aljezur", added the CDOS.

 

 

The situations that occurred are mobilizing 177 operators, supported by 71 vehicles.

Part of the teams on the ground are reinforcements from the Barlavento Algarvio, who were already on standby and took action, namely in Faro.
