After the suspended PDM, Câmara de Loulé buys land in Quarteira

The purchase of the land takes place after the municipality suspended the Municipal Master Plan (PDM) in 2019.

The Câmara de Loulé will buy land, for 1,5 million euros, next to the place where the fruit market takes place, in Quarteira, to create a green area there, with underground parking.

The purchase of the land takes place after the municipality had, in 2019, Suspended the Municipal Master Plan (PDM) to stop the construction of more urbanizations.

This is an area that already has a long history of urbanization proposals.

It was for that land that the construction of buildings was planned, as well as the Quarteira Cultural Center, in a project by the famous architect Eduardo Souto Moura, even when the Chamber was led by Seruca Emídio (PSD).

Thus, with the purchase of the land, the municipality will prevent construction, designing «a green space for leisure that will be integrated into the ecological structure of the city, essential to guarantee the harmonious balance between the consolidated buildings and the areas of enjoyment and leisure» .

The car park, on the other hand, "will be an important response to the growing demand, either due to the high number of tourists visiting the city, or due to the increase in business related to commerce and services, in that area of the city", says the Loulé Chamber.

During the ordinary session of the Municipal Assembly, where the proposal was approved, Vítor Aleixo was delighted with this initiative.

“This moment has enormous meaning. It was a political flag to which we dedicated ourselves for more than two decades”, he said.

«Since 1998, at the time performing municipal functions in the municipal executive, we realized that that land would be strategic and very important, a unique opportunity to decompress the extremely high urban load that, already at that time, contributed to generate a negative image of the city», added.

With this option, the Loulé Council will contribute to making the city more sustainable, capable of hosting and protecting biodiversity, by «privileging environmental quality with the creation of a large green lung», which will allow the reduction of CO2 emissions, thus creating a healthier environment for people”.
